The Hyundai Kia Automotive Group (HKAG) has announced that it will develop low-carbon emitting, eco-friendly cars, and as reported here earlier, Hyundai will launch its first small hybrid car, the Elantra Hybrid LPI, in July 2009. This will be the company’s first step in its larger strategy for a greener automotive future.
HKAG plans to expand its small hybrid car lineup to include mid-size sedans in the next two years – it plans to produce 30,000 hybrid vehicles by 2010, and 500,000 hybrid vehicles by 2018. HKAG also plans to manufacture fuel-cell electric vehicles, starting in 2012. The group will produce 1,000 units of fuel-cell vehicles that year, going up to 30,000 units by 2018.
