Vauxhall Ampera: Electrification…!

GM is really turning up the heat with electric/hybrid cars. First the Chevy Volt, and now this - the Vauxhall Ampera - which is essentially the Euro-spec Volt

General Motors seems to be going all out with electric cars these days. First, it was the very cool Chevrolet Volt and now it’s the equally hot Vauxhall Ampera – the European version of the Chevy Volt. ‘The Vauxhall Ampera shows all the opportunities advanced propulsion technologies offer for car design. We had to maximise the aerodynamic efficiency but still offer ultimate everyday driving comfort. All of that is presented in an upscale, sporty look that builds on Vauxhall’s theme of sculptural forms and expressive lines,’ says Phil Zak, Director - Exterior Design, GM Europe.

With the Ampera, Vauxhall has paid special attention to the car’s aerodynamics and the usage of lightweight materials to minimise drag and maximise performance. The car, which is likely to go into production in 2011, uses the same ‘Voletc’ plug-in hybrid technology as the Chevy Volt, and will have a range of about 60km in electric-only mode, and 500km if the IC engine is also used.
