Hino trucks now being imported to India from Thailand
Back in September 2008, we had said that Hino Motors (a 100% subsidiary of Toyota) would be launching its trucks in India by mid-2009. And indeed, the company has started importing its commercial vehicles to India from its plant in Thailand. However, this is simply an interim measure and the company also intends to set up its manufacturing operations in India in the near future.
Starting immediately, Hino is launching its trucks and tippers in Indian market, followed by buses, which will be launched over the next two months. The company is looking at launching its products in the ‘premium segment,’ meaning it wants to compete with companies like Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and other European and Japanese players. The company aims to sell anywhere between 500-1,000 trucks in India during the current financial year.
Hino, which is setting up dealerships in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Delhi to begin with, hopes to spread to more States in the country over the next few months. To boost sales, it also plans to set up a finance arm with its trading and logistics partner, Marubeni Corporation.
