Mazda MX-5 Superlight concept car shown at Frankfurt

The Mazda MX-5 Superlight show car is based on the production MX-5

Mazda is celebrating the heritage of its much-acclaimed MX-5 roadster with a special show car, the MX-5 Superlight. Created by Mazda’s European design team, the Superlight is supposed to be a lightweight, high-performance sportscar that’s fun to drive and also very fuel efficient.

Created especially for the Frankfurt Motor Show, the MX-5 Superlight is based on the third-generation production roadster, further pared down to just the absolute basics of the lightweight sportscar formula. The car, which weighs less than 1,000kg, is fitted with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 125 horsepower and 167Nm of torque, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The Mazda MX5 Superlight can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 8.9 seconds, though Mazda doesn’t mention the car’s top speed.

As an inexpensive, lightweight sportscar that’s simple, reliable and fun to drive, the MX-5 Superlight looks quite interesting. However, we doubt if Mazda will put this car into production.
