Daimler AG to invest 1,400 million euros towards Mercedes-Benz’s next generation compact cars

Mercedes-Benz will launch the successors to its current B- and A-Class cars by end-2011. Will those vehicles also come to India? They just might!

Daimler AG has announced its plans to invest 1,400 million euros towards expanding Mercedes-Benz’s operations in Europe. Daimler will invest 600 million euros for the expansion of a plant at Rastatt (in Germany) where Mercedes-Benz’s compact vehicles are built, and 800 million euros towards setting up a new car plant in Kecskemét, in Hungary.

‘With this significant investment we are defining our future in the compact car segment,’ said Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. By end-2011, Mercedes-Benz will start producing the successors to its current generation A- and B-Class cars at its Rastatt plant.

Currently, the most important markets for Mercedes-Benz’s compact cars are Germany, Italy, France and the UK. The Mercedes B-Class was also launched in China recently, where it has been fairly successful. We suppose the next generation A- and B-Class cars might also ultimately be produced in India, since Mercedes-Benz is now definitely considering the expansion of its portfolio in the Indian market…
