Mahindra Gio mini truck launched, priced at Rs 1.65 lakh

The Mahindra Gio is now the cheapest four-wheel mini truck in India

Mahindra & Mahindra has launched its new mini truck – the Gio – and the vehicle is priced at just Rs 1.65 lakh, making it more than Rs one lakh cheaper than the Tata Ace. The Mahindra Gio is powered by a two-cylinder, 441cc, 9-horsepower engine (developed and manufactured by Kohler in India) that’s mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. The vehicle, which has a payload of 0.5 tonnes, will be launched all over India in a phased manner.

‘With the launch of the Mahindra Gio, we have created a new compact truck category in the commercial vehicle segment. The Gio is the first of its kind entry level four-wheel cargo vehicle, and is all set to change the dynamics of the small CV segment,’ says Dr Pawan Goenka, President - Automotive Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

Indeed, with cargo carrying three-wheelers priced at around Rs 1.4 lakh, the Mahindra Gio’s pricing seems to offer great value for money. M&M plans to build around 2,000-3,000 units of the Gio every month and this mini truck is likely to be a very profitable addition to M&M’s commercial vehicles portfolio. The company is already the market leader when it comes to utility vehicle-based pick-up trucks.

And here’s another intriguing thought. Now that M&M is testing the waters with the Gio mini truck, is it also in the process of developing a small, low cost car that could someday compete with the Tata Nano? Just thinking out aloud… :-)

Its one of a kind.

it is not one of its kind or something, just that it is unique. Also that the truck here called the gio can also be referred as the nano of trucks (like nano is the nano of cars).
