2010 Hyundai Sonata to get all-new 2.4-litre Theta II GDI engine
Hyundai has developed an all-new 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that will first be used on the new Sonata, which will be launched in India in 2010. With ‘gasoline direct injection’ technology, this Theta II GDI engine will, according to Hyundai, use less fuel, have significantly lower emissions and will be more powerful and responsive when compared to a conventional fuel-injected petrol engine.
Engineered in Namyang, Korea, the Theta II 2.4L GDI engine, with continuously variable valve timing (CVVT), delivers 200 horsepower at 6,300rpm and 250Nm of torque at 4,250rpm. The Hyundai engine’s GDI technology entails the use of individual fuel injectors for each cylinder, positioned to deliver the optimal fuel charge directly into the combustion chamber. This bypasses the challenge of accurate fuel delivery at higher engine speeds, which GDI does better than traditional fuel-injection.
With its stylish lines and cutting-edge technologies, the new Hyundai Sonata should finally be a worthy competitor to the likes of the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. We expect HMIL to have the car on display during the Auto Expo in Delhi, in January 2010.
