Underneath its rather conservative styling, the new Audi A8 is likely to be a hugely competent car. We expect the new A8 to be available in India by end-2010

The all-new, 2010 Audi A8 (we're referring to it as the 2010 A8, but Audi insists it's a 2011 model...) was unveiled in Miami, in the US, yesterday. ‘The new flagship demonstrates the brand's proverbial Vorsprung durch Technik with its light aluminum body, its powerful and highly efficient engines, the further improved MMI operating system, new driver assistance systems, the full LED headlights and an elegant interior with a craftsman's level of workmanship,’ says a press release from Audi.

‘The new Audi A8 is the sportiest sedan in its segment. It combines numerous functions in a new and intelligent way. And it's unmatched in the stylistic elements and impression of the interior,’ says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management, Audi AG.

The new A8 will be available with a range of powerful FSI petrol and TDI diesel engines (a hybrid powertrain is also likely...), eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, adaptive air suspension, LED headlamps, Quattro all-wheel-drive and aluminium space frame construction. Inside, there’s Audi's new MMI touch-screen operating/navigation system, high-end Bang & Olufsen sound system with 19 speakers, and seats with optional ventilation and massage functions, with individual rear seats being optional.

The new Audi A8 will be on display at the Auto Expo in Delhi, in January 2010. We expect the car to go on sale in India by end-2010, with prices starting at around Rs one crore and above.

Can it compete with the BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
