Pontiac's muscle car ethic simply wouldn't work in a world that wants hybrids and battery-powered electric cars that are clean and green. Goodbye, Pontiac...
While Saab waits for its fate to be decided next week (the brand is likely to be closed forever), another General Motors brand – Pontiac – has reached the end of the line. During its recent restructuring, GM had decided to shut down the Pontiac brand and the last Pontiac – a white G6 sedan – rolled off the assembly line yesterday from Pontiac’s plant in Orion, in the US.
The Pontiac brand, which made its debut way back in 1926 at the York Auto Show, fuelled American consumers’ love for muscle cars for many decades with iconic cars like the GTO and the Firebird. In its 83 years of existence, Pontiac sold more than 41 million cars and trucks. Sales peaked in 1984, with around 850,000 Pontiac vehicles being sold in that year.
In December this year, GM will also end production of the Pontiac G3 Wave, a subcompact built in Mexico and sold only in Canada. The world would have then seen the last of Pontiac. Rust in peace, Pontiac.
