The Suzuki Alto (Maruti A-Star in India) recorded a scarcely believable 50km/l of fuel efficiency in the 'urban cycle' phase of the Aussie MPG marathon...
The Suzuki Alto (sold as Maruti A-Star in India), which completed a marathon run across New Zealand last month, averaging as much as 22.5km/l, has now completed a mileage marathon in Australia. This time, the Alto recorded mileage figures of 25km/l overall, and 50km/l in city traffic, making it the most fuel-efficient of all vehicles that took part in the marathon.
The Global Green Challenge ran from Darwin to Adelaide in Australia, and placed conventional and alternative fuel cars against each other in a 3,040km real world test. The winner of the challenge was the vehicle judged to have recorded the biggest improvement over its official fuel consumption figure. The Suzuki Alto won the ‘Light’ and ‘Small’ car categories, ‘Best urban cycle’ category and recorded overall CO2 emissions of 89.9g/km, using just 123 litres of fuel for the seven-day trip.
Using a simple combination of lightweight design, aerodynamic efficiency and a small and efficient 1.0-litre petrol engine the Alto even managed to outrank similar size diesel cars, including the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic Turbo Diesel and MINI Cooper D, which are widely considered to be some of the most fuel efficient cars in the segment.
