According to Tata Motors' MD (India Ops), P M Telang, an electric version of the Indica could be in showrooms in India by early-2011...
Tata Motors has announced that it will launch a battery-powered electric version of the Indica in the domestic market by 2011. Tata Motors is already working on the Indica electric vehicle (EV), which it will also launch in various European countries by the end of next year.
‘The electric Indica will be launched in India at around the same time when it’s launched globally,’ said Tata Motors MD (India operations), P M Telang. He also indicated that Tata Motors will carry out a comprehensive feasibility study regarding the Indica EV, sometime in 2010. ‘We have to look into the cost equation in India. We have to see the market demand, as it will be an expensive vehicle. Electricity is also not easily available in the country,’ said Telang.
Tata Motors isn’t the only car manufacturer with plans of launching an electric car in India. General Motors India recently tied up with the Bangalore-based Reva Electric Car Company (RECC) to develop an electric version of the Spark. The Spark EV, as well as RECC’s own Reva NXG and NXR electric cars, are expected to be launched in India by mid-2010.
