Nissan’s new global sedan unveiled, will be launched in India by mid-2011
Nissan today unveiled its all-new global sedan at the 8th China (Guangzhou) International Automobile Exhibition. Though the new car is based on the same ‘V platform’ as the Nissan Micra sold in India, Nissan has made it clear that the new sedan is not a ‘saloon version’ of the Micra and is, instead, a brand-new car developed independently.
Nissan’s new global sedan, named ‘Sunny’ for the Chinese market, will go on sale in China in January 2011 and will then be launched in as many as 170 countries worldwide, under different names. The car will come to India in the second half of 2011 and will be manufactured at Nissan’s plant at Oragadam, near Chennai.
‘Following the success of our first locally made car – the Nissan Micra – we are happy to reveal the first visuals of the second car to be produced in India. We are confident that the new global sedan, which is also based on the versatile ‘V platform,’ will delight the discerning Indian customer. The model will be launched in India in the second half of 2011,’ says Kiminobu Tokuyama, Managing Director & CEO, Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd.
Nissan claims its new global sedan, which will be fitted with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, will be a class leader in terms of fuel economy and cabin space. What remains to be seen, at least in the Indian context, is whether the car will be priced to take on the Honda City, or the significantly cheaper Toyota Etios. Either way, the ensuing batter should be quite interesting.
