After the Pajeros and Monteros, with their stratospheric price tags, Mitsubishi will now be offering a reasonably-priced SUV - the Outlander - in India
With its outdated product lineup and outlandish pricing, Mitsubishi has taken a beating in the Indian car market over the last few years. However, the Japanese company intends to set things right, starting with its new SUV, the Outlander. Mitsubishi plans to launch this SUV at around Rs 15.5-16.0 lakh, undercutting the Honda CR-V by a very significant margin.
Pitched against the CR-V, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Endeavour and Chevy Captiva, the Outlander will offer impeccable engineering and Mitsubishi’s WRC-heritage at a very reasonable price. The Indian SUV market currently stands at about 1.30 lakh units per annum, and Mitsubishi hopes to take a sizeable chunk of that with the Outlander.
The Outlander will be powered by Mitsubishi’s 2400cc MIVEC petrol engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission (with the paddle-shift option) and a computer-controlled 4WD system. The vehicle will be assembled in Chennai by HM Mitsubishi, a JV between Hindustan Motors and Mitsubishi Motors.
