BYD Auto launches plug-in Hybrid in China

Looks like an old Toyota Corolla, but the BYD F3DM is a fully functional, made-in-China plug-in hybrid. The Japanese, Koreans and Americans don’t have anything like it yet!

The Chinese seem to be steaming ahead with development on hybrids, beating American, Japanese and Korean carmakers to the punch. For example, while Chevrolet is still at least two years away from launching the Volt, Chinese carmaker, BYD Auto, has already launched China’s first plug-in hybrid – the F3DM sedan. The vehicle, which was recently launched in China, will be showcased at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2009.

While the Chevy Volt is expected to cost around US$40,000 when it goes on sale in 2011, the F3DM will be priced at the equivalent of around US$21,900 in China...

HKAG gets serious about hybrids and fuel-cell cars

The Hyundai Kia Automotive Group (HKAG) has announced that it will develop low-carbon emitting, eco-friendly cars, and as reported here earlier, Hyundai will launch its first small hybrid car, the Elantra Hybrid LPI, in July 2009. This will be the company’s first step in its larger strategy for a greener automotive future.

HKAG plans to expand its small hybrid car lineup to include mid-size sedans in the next two years – it plans to produce 30,000 hybrid vehicles by 2010, and 500,000 hybrid vehicles by 2018. HKAG also plans to manufacture fuel-cell electric vehicles, starting in 2012. The group will produce 1,000 units of fuel-cell vehicles that year, going up to 30,000 units by 2018.

Toyota Prius: Sales top 1 million mark

More than a million Prius cars have been sold worldwide, over the last 11 years!

Even as other carmakers are trying to hurry up and follow Toyota’s example, sales of the Toyota Prius – the world’s first mass-produced petrol-electric hybrid vehicle – have passed the one million mark. At the end of April this year, Toyota had sold approximately 1,028,000 units of the Prius.

While Toyota has no immediate plans of bringing the Prius to India (though Honda says it will get the Civic Hybrid here very soon!), the Prius is sold in more than 40 countries already. Toyota claims the Prius has significantly reduced vehicle CO2 emissions worldwide.

The all-new Honda Insight Hybrid. For the first time ever, the Toyota Prius is going to have some serious competition to deal with…!

Honda has released more details on the Insight Hybrid, a five-door family hatchback that looks all set to take on the Toyota Prius on its own turf.
